Lavender Plants

Currently, there are approximately 4,600 lavender plants growing on the rugged, rocky hillside within our 26 acres, including seven different varieties: Provence, Hidcote, Hidcote Giant, Maillette, Twickle Purple, Grosso and Fred Boutin.

Our farm started in the Fall of 2004, after we planted 1,000 4" Provence lavender plants. On Halloween weekend, our family and closest friends came and helped us plant them all. After planting, we watered them in and never watered them again that first year.

An additional 3,600 lavender plants of various varieties were terraced in a circular pattern around the remaining hillside in Fall 2005. They were a smaller size than the original 4" plants we started with on the 2004 planting, and we planted not knowing that we were going into drought conditions in Texas. Most lavender plants do fine in low water situations, once established, but these small plants were struggling to survive in such stressful conditions. Therefore, we put out drip line irrigation to all of our lavender plants and watered regularly. The majority of the plants has survived and is growing nicely. We are excited about the different varieties planted which will allow for a longer bloom season since many bloom earlier in the summer and at different times than the Provence. In addition, some varieties are more suitable than others for cooking, oil production or fragrant purposes.
